Microsoft Research has release an app called Group Shot which "helps you create a perfect group photo out of a series of group photos." It basically allows you to take the best parts of several successive photos of a group and easily stitch them into one "perfect" shot. Group Shot also helps you remove unwanted objects from the background of your photo. It sounds excellent if you have a few ex's in the crowd, and is a free download from Microsoft.
