ASUS Extreme Radeon X1800 XT TOP/2DHTV Review

If you're tired of Radeon X1800 XT cards that follow ATI's reference design, you'll definitely want to check out today's review of the ASUS Extreme X1800 XT TOP. Not only does the board feature a nearly silent dual-slot cooler, the board even ships with its own separate power supply and gamepad. The board is clocked at a blazing 700MHz on the graphics core and 800MHz memory, making it the fastest Radeon X1800 XT graphics card on the planet, and this would probably be the fastest graphics card in existence if it weren’t for the GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB. Congratulations to ASUS for putting together such a remarkable piece of hardware. Now if we can just get our hands on some overclocking software so we can really push this card to the limit!

Return of the redesign mock-up

Just have a gander at this mock-up created by Yannis Bolman that was posted on the NGCFrance forums. Boasting an analog stick, a compact folding mechanic and GBA SP aesthetics, this may just be one of the best whimsical design dreams we've laid our almost fully decayed eyes on. The Touch Mode position looks like it may be a bit uncomfortable to hold.

Final Fight: Streetwise looking for a little respect

The American-developed Final Fight: Streetwise will attempt to buck the decent 3D beat-'em-up trend with its arrival on the PS2 and Xbox next month.

Metro City is a bit more free-roaming in the updated brawler's main mode, where you can actually earn the respect of its NPC inhabitants instead of throttling them. Of course, the more linear arcade mode is what we're looking forward to, with its co-op gameplay and hoped-for option of playing as Guy or our favorite one-suspender-strapped mayor.

EvolutionTV supports video for PSP

TiVo may have beaten them to the punch with TiVo ToGo, but Miglia Technology nonetheless has their own video compression and export software that may prove quite an asset to fans of both the PSP and Apple Computers. Their new software compresses live television in real-time, which means no more waiting for boring old progress meters to finish up. If you're not a Mac owner, however, you're out of luck since this only works for macs, Macphiles prepare to simplify your life.

Possible Revolution menu screen

The above video image comes from Nintendo.co.jp via Google Video and appears to be some kind of menu system, the name found on the video reads "Nintendo RS" and is dated 12/29/2005. Upon first viewing, you might think you're starting to play Electroplankton, but in the final frame or two there is an image of menu options and Nintendo RS is clearly seen at the top left corner. You can also see a "Start Game" and "Introduce a DVD" option.

The Google video page includes the following description: "Menu beta that Nintendo gave the companies." Not sure who uploaded the short video, and/or if it was in fact by Nintendo of Japan, but the Nintendo RS moniker is very similar to the Nintendo DS logo in style.

Ferrari 599GTB

The new Ferrari slated to replace the 575M Maranello will be called the 599 GTB, and not the F600 Imola as previously rumored. The latest in the famous line of Grand Touring Berlinettas, the 599 is named after the 5,999 cc V12 engine, which it inherits from the Ferrari Enzo supercar. With 620 hp available to motivate the two-seater coupe, performance should be more than adequate.

Penned by Pininfarina, the 599 GTB is reminiscent of the 612 Scaglietti, and owes much to Pininfarina's Ferrari Rossa concept.

The Optimus mini three

We don't know exactly how "mini" this thing really is, but one Mr. Art Lebedev was kind enough to clue us in a bit on what he's been cooking up since rocking the peripherals boat last July with his Optimus OLED keyboard design. If we didn't know any better, we'd think he was going to try and get this three-key beauty out early next month (being that his site claims "good things come in small packages February 1, 2006").

The LTB Audio Wireless Headphones get their job done using 2.4GHz wireless technology, besting the usual 900MHz you'll find in most wireless headphones. Nothing too fancy, the headphones have a built-in rechargeable battery, and can charge up at the base station, which houses the RCA and 3.5mm hookups. Also, multiple transmission channels can be selected from to get the optimum signal.

US game sales hit record $10.5 billion in 2005

The NPD Group reports U.S. game retail sales hit a record $10.5 billion in 2005, breaking the previous record of $10.3 billion set back in 2002. And get this; software sales for the GBA, Nintendo DS and Sony PSP increased by 42 percent over 2004. Nintendo's five-year-old GBA comprised a whopping 52% of total handheld sales.

The article continues: "Console software experienced a 12 percent decline, with hardware and accessories declining 3 percent and 8 percent respectively from 2004. Many analysts and executives blame the decline in console software and hardware sales on consumer anticipation of the Xbox 360, which remains in short supply nearly three months after the console's launch."

Geometry Wars trial downloaded over 200K times

Greg Canessa, the group manager in charge of Live Arcade, said the trial of Geometry Wars has been downloaded over 200K times and sold nearly 45K copies adding, "Geometry Wars has been our Halo." The article on MTV gets some industry reaction to Microsoft's Arcade service and to GW in particular; Epic's CliffyB calls it "an interactive version of those acid-trip musical visualization devices."

Geometry Wars' developer, Stephen Cakebread of Bizarre Creations, originally planned on having mazes and multiplayer functionaltiy in the sequel to the original Geometry Wars, which appeared in Project Gotham Racing 2. (Tip from Cakebread: the game stops getting harder around 5 million points, the only challenge then is staying alive as long as possible!) MTV says, "Developers interviewed for this story estimated that the cost to create a Live Arcade game could run between $10,000 to $100,000." Let's take the extreme example and say Microsoft takes 50% of the sale from the game and that Geometry Wars cost $100,000, Bizarre has still made a 12.5% profit in under two months!

Dish Network ViP 622 HD DVR

Like the ViP 221, the ViP 622 is MPEG-4 compatible but adds a 250GB hard drive for your time-shifting pleasure. That sounds like a large capacity drive, but it can only hold up to a disappointing 25 hours of high-def. The other barely adequate spec is the 622 only contains one HD and one SD tuner; even the older Dish models like the 921 and 942 enabled three tuners.
