Chicago Auto Show: Lincoln Navigator world premiere

As with the Expedition, the Lincoln Navigator's "all-new" five-link independent rear suspension attacked to a stiffer chassis should afford smooth travel and better transient responses. The driveline will likewise sound familiar to those who checked out the Expy's Houston debut. A 5.4L Triton V-8 (300 hp/ 365 ft.-lbs.) matched to a six-speed slushbox. Lincoln is claiming up to a 7-percent increase in highway fuel economy versus a typical 4-speed automatic. Uprated four-wheel discs with anti-lock control are standard, as is Advance Trac traction control and Roll Stability Control. For those hauling big toys, the Navigator can accommodate more than 1600 lbs. of cargo, or tow up to 9,100 lbs. (in standard-length 4x2 trim).

At least owners will have a 600-watt THX II Certified stereo system to keep them occupied, and the kiddies can be anesthetized via rear-seat DVD player with 8" screen and wireless headphones.

DS Lite: Just more facts & colors!

Having analyzed each page of the DSLite manual(Caution,.pdf), here now are the unaltered facts:

* The DS Lite can cause seizures. Unfortunately, the guidelines offered in this regard don't quite seem to match with the DS' design. Sitting or standing "as far away from the screen as possible" might be somewhat limited by the length of your arms.
* The DS Lite will kill your grandfather. Bringing the DS and its extremely deadly wireless signals within 9 inches of a pacemaker is considered to be hazardous.
* The DS Lite does not contain latex. This is probably important.
* A GBA Slot Cover is included.
* The stylus slides in horizontally on the right-hand side of the DS. It also slides out. Very clever.
* The Wrist Strap is no longer included.
* On the lowest screen brightness setting, the battery should last 15-19 hours.
* On the brightest setting, it'll last 5-8 hours. Perfect to occupy you in-between PSP firmware upgrades.
* The Lower Screen is touch-sensitive.

* The DS Lite AC Adapter ONLY works with the DS Lite. And vice versa.
* Only use a Nintendo-licensed stylus. Obscenely long fingernails and knitting needles aren't nearly as accurate.
* Pictochat is still not an internet application.
* One of 4 brightness levels can be enabled via the main menu. Sadly, this only applies to the screen.
* When removing a GBA pak from the GBA slot, push it out with your thumb.
* Optimum battery performance requires the surroundings to be kept above 50 degrees. Storing your DS next to the beer in the fridge is convenient, but technically frowned upon.
* Games that don't support wireless play cannot be played wirelessly.
* There is a workaround for when the touch screen doesn't work. Try poking the bottom screen instead.
* When in doubt, read the instruction manual. Quite possibly the best advice ever.

Some new images of the Nintendo DS Lite have surfaced on Nintendo's Japanese site.

Getting TV shows with Azureus and Bittorrent

This is a how-to on grabbing missed TV shows off Bittorrent and Azureus. The author says "missed" because we all know the law protects time shifting, not copying something you didn't pay for. In fact, the author begins with, "I'll start by saying that I am a paying cable subscriber." Unfortunately, just because you're paying for cable won't indemnify you from legal action thanks to the DMCA.

This is a great overview of the process, including a lot of commentary from the author on his own proclivities. What this boils down to is something we used to call "broadcatching," or grabbing stuff using RSS and Bittorrent. Only here's some added info with Azureus and a cool web automation technique. For you Linux cats, there's the TV RSS app.

PS3 to have a hard drive after all?

Ken Kutaragi himself confirmed all the way back in June of last year that the PS3 would ship without an internal hard drive, saying that "no matter how much [capacity] we put in it, it won't be enough." Since then, all credible reports pointed to the idea that a hard drive would be an option, not a bundled feature. However, we were struck by the statement in a BusinessWeek article about the PS3 that the console would boast "a huge hard disk to store photos, music, and TV shows." Given that the article appears to get just about everything else right, and was written by Japan-based reporter Kenji Hall -- who apparently had direct access to Sony brass -- it would seem odd for this to be untrue. (And Hall seems to know his Sony history, pointing out elsewhere in the article that the failed PSX did have a hard drive). It looks like the case of the PS3 hard drive goes back into the unsolved mysteries file for now.

video iPod reRelease?

Supposedly these are "leak"'d images of the full-screen iPod video released the very day after ThinkSecret's supposed confirmation on the new video iPod. Don't mind the Photoshop metadata in the images' EXIF tags, because this is a very nice rendering of what could be the 6G iPod.

Lotus unveils new Exige 'S'

Lotus revamped Toyota's 1.8-liter VVTL-i engine with an upgrade to the supercharger/intercooler package from the Exige 240R, resulting in 218 hp at 7800 rpm and 159 lb-ft of torque at 5500 rpm. (The same engine in the base Exige is rated at 189 hp.) Redlined at 8500 rpm, the new engine package makes the Exige S the quickest-ever Lotus production car, with a 0-60 mph time of only 4.1 seconds, and 100 mph reached in less than 10 seconds. The Exige S will be the base production car for the full-race Lotus Sport Exige GT3. Unfortunately, all this fun won't be exported to North America, but our readers in Europe and the Asia/Pacific region can enjoy this lightweight flyer for about $53,000, starting in late spring 2006.

Scientists develop their own lightning ball machine

Some researchers in Israel have built their very own lightning fireball machine using the magnetron from a domestic microwave. The device drills into a solid, and when it pulls out it brings with it a 3-cm floating fireball that quivers like a jellyfish and floats in the air, but only lasts a few milliseconds. The developers of the device are hoping they can use the lightning balls for practical applications.

Auto-Focus, low-light functions coming to cameraphones

MagnaChip Semiconductor has released a new CMOS that the company says offers superior low-light performance at resolutions of up to 1.3 megapixels. Since most cameraphones lack flashes, better low-light shooting could mark a major improvement. Another advance comes courtesy of TransChip, which will demo a new system at 3GSM which the company says can perform autofocus and optical zoom tasks for cameraphones. According to the company, the system will enable 3x zoom, and autofocus using, among other technologies, the Johnson Electric's micromotor-driven NanoLens (pictured).
