BMW 3-Series Coupe

Here's some shots showing the yet to be released BMW 3-Series Coupe, including the interior. The design seems to strike a nice balance between the pudginess of the E46 and the tautness of the E36.

The Cormorant -- a robotic swimming spy drone for the Navy

This new robotic-submarine-spy-plane from Lockheed Martin's Skunk Works is just a concept for now. The Cormorant is designed to be launched from the large missile tubes on subs that were originally designed for nuclear weapons. Once ejected, the robotic plane floats to the surface then fires up its rockets to fly its mission, be it a surgical missile strike or surveillance. After completion, the plane returns to the sea and is found by a robotic underwater vehicle which brings the drone back to the sub. DARPA is currently funding tests of a few of the systems proposed for the Cormant, and will then decide whether to build a prototype.

Space Invaders wall decals invade your living space

blik surface graphics is selling these 13" blick INVADERS for your walls. They come in packs of 8 for an unreasonably steep $45, leading us to ponder who their intended market is.

What would one do with these? If they're just decoration, a simple stencil and some cheap paint seems like a far more economical solution; however, since they're decals, it follows that you're supposed to move them around. Every morning, right after feeding the pets and watering the plants, you could remove some of the invaders and drop the rest down a line.

HP Digital Entertainment Center z556 - PC Magazine

At $1,499 HP's Digital Entertainment Center z556 and has two SDTV tuners to complement the ATSC. No cable or satellite support in the z556, which is unfortunately much too common in the retail systems. On the flip-side, the z556 looks more at home in your home entertainment center with it's component look and feel.

An Intel Pentium 4 running at 3.0 GHz, 512 MB of RAM, a 250 GB hard drive and an NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GPU is also under the hood; specs that are close to what we cobbled for less. PC Mag gave the z556 four out of five stars, mainly because it does the basic job of recording your OTA high-def and because it's $500 less than last year's overpriced model.

uBrowser: Web browsing in 3D

With uBrowser you can stick your web browser on a virtual 3D surface and spin it around in real time. In truth it's basically a tech demo that showcases Mozilla's Gecko web page rendering engine married to OpenGL. It's not really good for anything, but it is fun to stick your favorite web site on a sphere or a waving flag and turn it this way and that. Since it's based on LibXUL, it's a fully functional web browser, which means you can click on links, check your Gmail, and even play flash games. And it's also open source.

How to delete your files when your laptop gets stolen

Mac Geekery has a cool guide to making your laptop (in this case a Mac) delete your important files in the event that it gets stolen. The meat of the thing is a shell script that periodically checks a remote web server for a file called "youve_been_stolen," and if it finds the file it quietly deletes the files in your home directory. You can also make it alert the new owner that it's stolen and any other shenanigans you can think up. This method could be extended pretty easily to Windows, but you'll have to figure it out yourself. Just make sure you've got your important files backed up somewhere, 'cause even if you get your laptop back you won't be getting the files back.

Numbler: Real-time web-based collaborative spreadsheet

Numbler is a web-based spreadsheet app that enables collaboration with others in real time. It works like most any spreadsheet but is has far fewer features, so it's probably best suited for keeping simple data that many people need to access and change at the same time. Numbler spreadsheets are identified by URL alone, so you don't have to register an account and it's easy to invite others to use your spreadsheet. It also has import and export features, including XML and CSV files such as Excel exports. Numbler is of course in beta.

NetJaxer: Make web apps behave like Windows apps

NetJaxer is an interesting app that lets you treat your web apps—Gmail, Ta-da List, Writely, etc.—like normal Windows apps. With NetJaxer you can create desktop and quicklaunch icons for them, make them run when Windows starts, and minimize to the system tray. When you run a web app with NetJaxer it's loaded in a NetJaxer window, which is basically a dumbed-down web browser. It sounds handy for people who always have a certain set of web apps running in the background and want an easy way to make them pop up at boot and get out of the way when not in use.

Cheapo PSP batteries that won't wonk out

Game news site Maxconsole took the chance and gave the 2600mAh MEGA PSP battery a spin. The verdict is MEGA performed just as well if not better than the PSP-branded battery. And all it costs is a $20.

The review doesn't specifically give any details about the testing, like if the control unit used (the original PSP battery) was brand new at the time of the experiment, and there's a strong chance that this could just be a promotional campaign cooked up by the website, so exercise caution before you make and definite decisions on introducing a non-Sony branded add-on to your handheld.

Department of Homeland Security looking to develop super-RFID tags?

Privacy advocates and Spychips authors Katherine Albrecht and Liz McIntyre say they have discovered a Request for Information issued by the Department of Homeland Security calling for "significant improvements in performance" over the current tech with respect to "superior remote data capture." Specifically, the document supposedly calls for a solution that can identify individual people sitting among others in a car or bus, without any special action on the part of the surveyed, at distances up to 25-feet.

Battlestar Galactica mod of Freespace 2 underway

A mod of the new Battlestar Galactica with the Freespace 2 game engine is currently underway and making some progress. Click on the image to see the mod's 13MB AVI trailer(Caution direct link).

This trailer gives a better sense of how things look than the images on the mod's home page at the moment (as the navigation there is a bit broken right now), but anything to mix a fan-favorite space combat sim with the hottest sci-fi show on TV today is definitely worth a look.

Of course, as with any total conversion or unofficial adaptation of a commercial property, there's always a chance this mod will get shut down before it ever gets released. As a retail game was made based on the old BSG continuity, this is a legitimate concern for the community developers trying to put this together.
