Crown Vic cruisers in NYC being replaced with Chargers?

New York City’s finest are trolling the aisles for a new set of wheels and they’ve decided to take the Dodge Charger for a test drive. The NYPD has agreed to buy 15 Chargers for a pilot program this summer, five models with V6 engines and 10 featuring Chrysler’s HEMI V8.

Awhile back that the Michigan State Police had tested many potential police cruisers and the results put the V8 Charger at the top in acceleration and fastest lap times. Apparently the NYPD were impressed and if the pilot program goes well, it could replace the city’s entire fleet of 3,000 Crown Vics and Impalas with Chargers.

Intel Chief Technology Officer Justin Rattner recently demoed the company's upcoming Clovertown quad-core processor, which will initially be seen in 2007 servers running two of the chips, for a total of eight cores under the hood. Rattner says the Clovertown architecture is scalable to 32 or more cores on a single chip, which should suffice until quantum computers finally go mainstream. According to Rattner, chips with hundreds of cores are theoretically possible with this technology.

Escapa

Escapa has you click and drag a little red box around the screen, trying to avoid bigger blue blocks. It's a variation on several games, one was called "Daleks" where you move your character one step at a time, and the enemies would inch closer. In Escapa, you drag your little box around in real time while the blue boxes chase and capture you.

Xfire users' attempted Solitaire coup

In a gamers' coup, a meme is spreading amongst Xfire users, showing that Solitaire can be cool.

Unfortunately, Solitaire's falling short of the coup's intended goal--to displace World of Warcraft as the most-played game. It's third in the rankings at the time of writing; the "sticky" factor of WoW and Counter-Strike is helping both games to beat the fad. Of course, Solitaire's requirements are such that you can run more than one game at once, or leave it running while AFK, which all adds to its impressive tally of minutes played so far.

Export OPML from Safari

Over on TUAW they mentioned a trick from MacOSXHints that'll allow you to export an OPML file of your RSS feeds out of Safari. Neat trick, and all this OPML export/import stuff is great, but it's a lot of tooling around the bookmarks files. There has to be a simpler way of keeping everything organized and synchronized.

Trace your way to adventure in Kaitou Rousseau

If you're expecting a game explicitly geared for girls, however (based on this screenshot of the game's main protagonist), you might be disappointed: it's just the rather male Rousseau playing at being a girl, in addition to his other adventures imitating police officers, odd sculptures, and apparently a window frame. Tracing new faces is the way to get through this puzzle-laden masquerade.

Japanese gamers can expect to start tracing a few disguises on their DSes sometime later this year.

The ultracapacitor, tomorrow's battery

MIT's Laboratory for Electromagnetic and Electronic Systems is hard at work on developing new ways to bust the chemical battery once and for all. Their research has produced methods to use vertically aligned single-wall carbon nanotube structures to create cheap, efficient, long-lasting ultracapacitors -- cells capable of delivering larger amounts of energy without all the fussiness of chemical batteries, like the temperature, discharge, explosion, and safety issues.

Half-Life 2 becomes episodic

Valve has revealed that the upcoming expansion pack, Half-Life 2: Aftermath, will be renamed Half-Life 2: Episode 1 and will be the first in a series of episodic games. It's unclear whether this announcement will affect the release date (previously announced as April 24th) or the distribution of the expansion pack.

Presumably Valve will be selling the episodes via Steam, similar to the upcoming SiN Episodes. Valve promised a retail release of Aftermath back in May 2005, but it's possible this may have changed in light of this announcement.

Linux alpha for Second Life released

As the Second Life website warns, this client connects to the main grid, so be careful--there are definitely still bugs in the system, and any changes you make to the world are permanent.

Initial testing proved favourable; it installs and runs perfectly on Fedora Core 3 boxes with NVidia binary graphics drivers. Although several features in the game client are missing or working poorly, they are known issues at this alpha stage, and the forums allow for discussion and feedback.

D&D movie sequel released on DVD

IGN's RPGVault interviewed the writers behind this misuse of $15 million. Massive budget aside, give them credit for tapping the expertise of Wizards of the Coast and attempting to "anchor the movie within the rules of the game". PLEASE don't waste money on this.
